Inspired by her mother`s bohemian style, Emma Bridgewater started designing sponge-decorated pottery after searching and failing to find her the perfect cup and saucer for a kitchenware & tableware birthday present.
Having graduated from London University with a degree in English Literature, Emma Bridgewater worked for knitwear designers Muir & Osborne. She became involved in every aspect of this small fashion company and it gave her the taste for doing something for herself.
She designed a small collection of patterns and shapes and went to Stoke-on-Trent, in search of a manufacturer for her kitchenware & tableware. Emma fortunately found a talented model-maker with a small workshop making good quality earthenware pottery goods in Chemical Lane, Longbridge Hayes. He started making Emma Bridgewater’s pottery and before long almost his entire factory was turned over to the production of her spongeware.
Emma Bridgewater met and married designer Matthew Rice in 1987, who produced a range of stationery and desk accessories featuring his watercolour paintings of Venice, Country Houses and Farms. Matthew now works in partnership with Emma on their combined kitchenware & tableware pottery pieces.
In 1991 production of Emma Bridgewater kitchenware and tableware was taken over by Emma Bridgewater Ltd, and due to increasing demand and productivity, production was moved to Eastwood Works in Hanley in 1996. Emma Bridgewater pottery is still produced today in an enormous Victorian pottery factory alongside the Caulden Canal in Stoke-on-Trent.
