Product Description

The novel which won the Prose Medal at the 1992 National Eisteddfod and which was acclaimed as a masterpiece by all three adjudicators. First published in 1992.

Nofel sy'n defnyddio delweddau o fytholeg Geltaidd gyda chefndir Pan-Ewropeaidd iddi, a ddisgrifiwyd fel gwaith 'awdur digamsyniol ei ddawn a rhyfeddol ei gamp', gan un o'r beirniaid. Enillydd y Fedal Ryddiaith yn Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1992. Cyhoeddwyd yn gyntaf ym 1992.

Seren Wen ar Gefndir Gwyn (White Star on a White Background) is a political allegory set in the future which tells of a technological war between Gwlad Alltud (Land of Exile) and an alliance between Tir Bach (The Small Country), Haf heb Haul (Summer without Sun), Gaeaf Mawr (Great Winter) and other countries. The book is peopled by exotic characters who represent the various lands: Gwlad Alltud is the home of Fischermädchen and Rawsman whose seat is the dark Castle Entwürdigung, while Tir Bach is ruled by Llwch Dan Draed (Dust under Foot). Represented as members of an oppressed culture, the people of Llawr Gwlad dream of personal emancipation and of the liberation of their homeland. The main protagonist, Gwern Esgus flees to escape imprisonment, and is subsequently given the task of planning a war against the occupying forces. But his loved one Anwes Bach y Galon is left behind, and she and the couple's young boy are held hostage in Castle Entwürdigung. The tale follows Gwern's travels through the allied countries, and back to Gwlad Alltud which he infiltrates only to meet ultimately with betrayal and death. Seren Wen ar Gefndir Gwyn is relevant to times when totalitarian powers have threatened the existence of distinct cultures. Critics have been drawn to interpret it as a condemnation of neo-imperialism, whether on European or Middle-Eastern shores. When published in 1992, Seren Wen ar Gefndir Gwyn helped Welsh prose to emerge from a period of inertia. Its idiom, influenced by the medieval Mabinogi, is highly original, and, ignoring the conventions of realism, it brings us into a world whose geography is the reflection of states of mind, a world without cliché which leaves the reader searching for terra cognita.

Mae Seren Wen ar Gefndir Gwyn yn ddrych gwleidyddol sydd yn trafod rhyfel yn y dyfodol rhwng Gwlad Alltud a chynghrair sydd yn cynnwys Tir Bach, Haf heb Haul, Gaeaf Mawr a gwledydd eraill. A hwythau dan ormes y gelyn, mae trigolion Llawr Gwlad yn dyheu am ryddid ac am hunanlywodraeth i'w gwlad. Ymgyrch Gwern Esgus i drefnu chwyldro yw canolbwynt y stori. Mae Gwern yn ffoi o'i gartref rhag iddo gael ei garcharu yng ngastell Entwürdigung, ond ni lwydda'i gariad Anwes Bach y Galon i ddianc, ac y mae hi a'i mab yn cael eu caethiwo. Dilyn hynt a helynt Gwern Esgus y mae'r darllenydd wrth i hwnnw ymweld â gwledydd y ddarpar gynghrair, ond cael ei fradychu a'i ladd yw hanes Gwern yn y diwedd. ar sawl golwg, dameg yw Seren Wen ar Gefndir Gwyn sydd yn sôn am y difrod mae totalitariaeth yn ei achosi i ddiwylliant y cenhedloedd bychain. Gellid dadlau fod awdur yn condemnio neo-imperialaeth yr oes sydd ohoni, boed yng ngorllewin Ewrop neu yn y dwyrain canol. Bu'r nofel yn hwb fawr i llenyddiaeth y Gymraeg pan gafodd ei chyhoeddi yn 1992. Mae iaith yn llyfr yn drawiadol o wreiddiol ac y mae'n cyfuno elfennau o ramantau'r Gymraeg Canol a iaith lafar y Gogledd. Byd heb ffiniau yw byd y llyfr, ac yn y byd hwwnw syniadau yw'r tirwedd.
